How effective is Coaching?

Coaching is one of the most cost effective and focussed ways of improving performance. 

 

What is Coaching?

It consists of informal but purposeful conversations which help clients develop insight to set and achieve goals.  Coaching addresses both strengths and weaknesses and takes into account personal preferences and circumstances.

 

What do Coaches do?

Coaches use a number of different techniques (such as active listening, asking questions, paraphrasing thoughts and ideas, reflecting feelings and meaning, challenging beliefs), to help clients identify and focus on what is important to them and what is working/not working for them at this time.   Coaches will ask a number of questions and may at time give suggestions but ultimately, coaching is non-directive meaning that clients will come to identify their own answers and make decisions as a result of the coaching process.  Coaches serve as sounding boards, they reflect your ideas, thoughts, and feelings back to you.  They question you about the link between your behaviours and your goals and ultimately help you to figure out where you want to go and the best way for you to get there.  Coaches also act as cheerleaders reminding you of your goals, skills and abilities, keeping you motivated and celebrating your successes.

 

What makes the Coaching conversation uniquely purposeful?

  • There is a goal/outcome to the conversation

  • There is a focus on questions to get you thinking at a deeper level

  • There is a strong emphasis on clarification for the purpose of helping clients gain insight
